State launches “30 X 30” plan to conserve natural values

On October 7, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order known as “30 by 30.” The order directs state agencies to deploy a number of strategies to store carbon in the state’s natural and working lands and remove it from the atmosphere. California was the first state in the nation to commit to the conservation of 30 percent of the state’s lands and waters by 2030 to fight species loss and ecosystem destruction.

In advancing this executive order, California joins 38 countries in support of the global effort to achieve protection for 30 percent of the planet by 2030. The executive order directs the California Natural Resources Agency to form a California Biodiversity Collaborative to bring together experts, leaders and communities to pursue a unified approach to protecting biodiversity and develop strategies to support the 30 by 30 goal.

Through the Biodiversity Collaborative, the state intends to develop an inclusive definition of “conserved” that represents the diversity of conservation efforts and outcomes found across California. This definition will be used to develop a “Pathways to 30 by 2030” document, which will identify conservation opportunities and strategies to help California achieve its goal.
