Tough financial situation leads to CSERC losing one biologist

For the past two years, CSERC biologist Brenda Whited led a wide range of field surveys in the local mountains.  Brenda set up wildlife photo-detection stations in the midst of snowstorms and freezing cold conditions.  During the summers, she measured livestock grazing impacts in meadows and streamside areas all across the forest.

Brenda also testified at county hearings for new development projects, attended various agency planning meetings, and wrote highly detailed comments for countless projects and plans.

In March, CSERC's executive director (John) called the staff together to inform them of the likelihood of furloughs and pay reductions.  Like many non-profits affected by the recession, CSERC has experienced a substantial drop in donations along with disappointing news from some key grant funders.  The staff understood the tight budget situation.  Brenda came to John soon after to say that she had a solution to keep the rest of the staff working full-time.  She had decided to help out by moving north to the Eureka area where family and friends would make the transition easy.

Soon afterwards, CSERC received two desperately needed grants.  By that time, Brenda had already agreed to start work for BLM on the north coast, and her move was too far underway to reverse.  So, sadly, CSERC is losing not only a talented and experienced biologist, we are losing a close friend and co-worker.

We know that donations to CSERC this year may not be easy.  But if you believe we are making a key difference in this spectacular region, please do what you can to help us to continue CSERC’s many programs.   It's a super tight fiscal year, and every donation helps us to keep up our efforts and retain key staff.
