Ever in search of the right light...

Some CSERC members may not recognize Phil Schermeister's name, but those who skim through the eye-catching pictures in National Geographic books and magazines have almost certainly seen many of his impressive photos.

Phil grew up on the Great Plains, where the simplicity of the landscape and the directness of the people still influence his work. His interest in nature photography was kindled when he started working for the National Geographic Society on assignment in the Flint Hills of Kansas.

Ever in search of the right light, he has traveled to all 50 states and several countries shooting stories. He's taken pictures featuring Mexico's Copper Canyon, the Connecticut River, and the Cherokee Indian Trail of Tears. While on assignment for National Geographic, he has photographed dozens of national parks, seashores, recreation areas, wild and scenic rivers, and wildlife refugees.

Closer to home, his coverage of California's Sierra Nevada mountains was recently published as a book by the National Geographic Society entitled "The Range of Light: California's Sierra Nevada." Another book: "America's Western Edge" was published by National Geographic in 2005, and his book about "Americass National Parks" was published by the Sociiety in 2006.

Phil and his family live near Twain Harte, allowing him to quickly access the local region to capture photographic images that reveal the moods and complexity of the mountain ecosystem.
