CSERC expands wildlife research into northwest Yosemite and Sonora Pass

In Yosemite...

Earlier this summer, Yosemite National Park staff invited CSERC to set up our wildlife photo-detection camera stations in the Park. Yosemite biologists are eager to know more about wildlife in the Park, particularly the rare and reclusive Pacific fisher.
It's a tough assignment for CSERC staff to have to hike into towering, impressive old growth forest groves or along beautiful riparian corridors in our search for the best locations to set up camera stations. But staff has somehow managed to sacrifice being behind their desks and do the work their job requires.

The results aren't in for most of our stations with several more months to go before this project reaches completion, but the images on the right are a sneak peak at some of the visitors we've had at our stations so far.

At Sonora Pass...

It's also been a tough assignment for CSERC to respond to requests to assist the U.S. Forest Service with photo-detection stations and other surveys to get photos of the newly discovered rare Sierra Nevada red fox up in the scenic crest zone of the Sonora Pass.
CSERC staff had already gone out with Stanislaus Forest Wildlife department to help survey for scat of the red fox (shown above), and were then asked if we would assist them in setting up photo detection stations to help locate more of the fox in areas the Forest Service biologists believe they may exist. We look forward to learning more about this rare and elusive creature, and to sharing with our members our research findings.
